Vagar Airport sets new passenger record for the fifth consecutive year

Vagar Airport on the Faroe Islands has set a new record with 292,393 passengers in 2016. Passenger-figures rose by a total of 5,8 per cent last year

2016 has been a busy year for Vagar Airport

Currently, Atlantic Airways is the only carrier that operates to and from the Faroe Islands on a regular basis. They are currently operating with two A319´s and have just introduced a new A320 to serve their destinations to and from the Faroe Islands. Apart from Atlantic Airways, Vagar Airport has seen a record number of ad-hoc charters in 2016, including the likes of Lufthansa and Wizzair.

New and exciting challenges in 2017

2017 will see the introduction of two new airlines onto the Faroese market.

SAS has announced that they will be starting a daily service from Copenhagen to the Faroe Islands from the 26th of March 2017.

Also Loganair, part of Flybe, has announced that they will start a seasonal service from Aberdeen to the Faroe Islands from late May till early September 2017.

“Faroese tourism has undergone a remarkable transformation since the funding of Visit Faroe Islands was doubled in 2012. The tourism-sector has been professionalized and the tourist-experience greatly improved. The combination of growing domestic demand, a healthy economy and the growth of tourism lays the ground for the growth of our passenger-figures”, says Jákup Sverri Kass, CEO at Vagar Airport.
