Flights will operate three times a week during winter

The Icelandic airline Icelandair has announced the expansion of its route between Keflavík and Vágar to include year-round service. Following the successful launch of regular passenger flights in the summer of 2024, the airline will now extend operations to include the winter season.

Starting this winter, flights will operate throughout the entire year, offering increased connection between Keflavík and Vágar. During the peak summer season, Icelandair operates up to six weekly departures. In the winter season, flights will be scheduled three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

“This is very good news for Vágar Airport and for the Faroe Islands as a whole. It opens up opportunities that we have not previously had during the winter months, particularly in terms of inbound travel,” says Regin I. Jakobsen, CEO of Vágar Airport.

Icelandair’s extensive route network includes seventeen destinations in North America. With Vágar Airport now integrated into this network, accessibility to the Faroe Islands will significantly improve for travelers from the United States and Canada, as well as from across Europe. These past two years of regular Icelandair service have shown that this route network allows us to reach an entirely new customer base.

Icelandair uses Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft for the route. These aircrafts carry 76 passengers, and the journey takes about one hour and forty-five minutes.

This is an exciting development for Faroese tourism, especially for increasing off-season traffic. There is little doubt that this will have a positive impact on passenger numbers at Vágar Airport and on Faroese tourism as a whole,” concludes Regin I. Jakobsen, CEO of Vágar Airport.
